Taming Added Sugar: The Quiet Driver of Belly Fat After 40

If you want one nutrition change with an outsized payoff, look at added sugar before anything else. Not the natural sugar in fruit or dairy — the added kind hiding in sodas, sweetened coffee, sauces, granola bars, and "healthy" snacks. For a man over 40, it's often the biggest lever on belly fat, energy crashes, and creeping blood-sugar problems.

Why it hits harder after 40:

  • Muscle loss lowers your buffer: Muscle soaks up blood sugar; as you lose it with age, spikes are harder to manage and more sugar gets stored as fat — often around the middle.

  • The crash cycle: A sugary snack spikes blood sugar, then drops it, leaving you hungry and craving the next hit. It quietly drives overeating all day.

  • It crowds out real food: Calories spent on sugar are calories not spent on the protein and fiber that keep you full.

Where the sugar actually hides:

  • Drinks are the worst offenders — soda, sweet tea, fancy coffee, "sports" drinks. Liquid sugar doesn't fill you up at all.

  • "Health halo" foods: flavored yogurt, granola, protein bars, breakfast cereal, and bottled sauces and dressings.

The practical playbook:

  • Fix drinks first. Swapping two sugary drinks a day for water, black coffee, or sparkling water is often the single highest-impact change a man can make.

  • Read labels for "added sugars" and aim to keep it under about 25–35 grams a day.

  • Don't ban it — keep the dessert you truly love and cut the sugar you won't even miss (the gas-station muffin, the third soda).

  • Lead with protein and fiber at meals; when you're full of real food, sugar cravings shrink on their own.

You don't need to be perfect. Cut the mindless, liquid, and hidden sugar, keep the occasional treat you actually savor, and your waistline and energy will thank you within weeks.

Supplement Spotlight: Daily Electrolytes — The Overlooked Fix for Afternoon Fatigue

If you're training hard, drinking plenty of water, and still feel flat by mid-afternoon, the problem probably isn't hydration. It's electrolytes. Sodium, potassium, and magnesium regulate muscle function, nerve signaling, and fluid balance. Water alone doesn't replace what you sweat out, and low electrolytes are a common, overlooked cause of fatigue, cramping, and poor recovery, especially for men who train consistently.

Here's what it actually does. A daily electrolyte supplement restores the mineral balance your body needs to keep muscles firing properly and fluid where it belongs. That means fewer cramps, steadier energy through the day, and better performance during longer or more intense training sessions. As you age, your body also gets less efficient at retaining these minerals, so replacing them daily becomes more important, not less.

How to take it: one serving daily, mixed into water. Many guys take it first thing in the morning or right before a workout to stay ahead of fluid loss rather than play catch-up.

We recommend keeping a daily electrolyte mix on hand for training days and hot weather alike. Here is the one we love: Daily Electrolytes by Thorne

Results may take longer than you expect, but the process never lets you down. Every workout, every healthy meal, and every disciplined decision moves you forward, even when you can't see it. Trust the work, not the timeline. Be the guy who stays committed to the process. That's where success is earned.

Quick Tip: Skydivers for a Stronger Back and Better Posture

Skydivers are an excellent bodyweight exercise for strengthening the muscles along your upper and lower back while also engaging your core and glutes. By lifting your arms and legs off the floor at the same time, you train the muscles that help support good posture and stabilize your spine.

The key is to lift with control instead of trying to raise your arms and legs as high as possible. Squeeze your shoulder blades together, tighten your glutes, and hold the top position for a second before lowering back down. Focus on quality contractions rather than speed.

Aim for 2–3 sets of 10–15 controlled reps. Strong back muscles improve posture, reduce the effects of sitting all day, and create a more stable foundation for lifting, walking, and everyday movement.

Myth or Real: "Your body can only use 30 grams of protein per meal."

Myth — mostly. You'll often hear that your body "can only absorb 30 grams of protein at a time" and wastes the rest. That's a misunderstanding. Your body absorbs virtually all the protein you eat — it just uses it at different rates. What's true is that muscle protein synthesis, the building signal, seems to max out around 30–40 grams of quality protein in a sitting; beyond that, extra protein is still digested and put to work on repair and other jobs, not flushed away. The practical takeaway isn't "never eat more than 30 grams." It's that spreading protein across three or four meals of roughly that size is a smart, efficient way to build muscle — while a single big steak dinner still counts toward your day. Eat protein at every meal; don't stress about the ceiling.

Our Picks: Supps We Actually Use

Some of our coach’s favorite supplements:

Add this to your water in the morning or in your post-workout shake. Creatine is one of the few supplements that has a mountain of data proving its benefits. Don’t miss out on it!

A great way to hit your protein goals. Don’t rely on a protein powder alone, but add it as a post-workout shake or midday shake to increase your protein intake and hit your protein goals. Remember, high protein equals higher muscle and higher satiety.

Replenishes essential electrolytes. Use this if you sweat a lot, do intermittent fasting, or go on long-distance walks, hikes, or runs.

Fit Trivia: Which mustachioed, bandana-wearing wrestling icon urged a generation of fans to "train, say your prayers, and eat your vitamins" as he body-slammed opponents throughout the 1980s?

Answer: Hulk Hogan! At the height of "Hulkamania," his flexing, shirt-ripping routine made him the most recognizable wrestler on the planet — and got a lot of kids doing push-ups in their living rooms.
