Fiber: The Forgotten Fat-Loss Lever
Everyone talks about protein. Almost nobody talks about fiber. Yet for fat loss after 40, fiber might be the highest-leverage nutrient you're ignoring — most men get about 15–17 grams a day when the target is 30–38 grams.
Why fiber punches above its weight:
Satiety: Fiber slows stomach emptying, so meals keep you full for hours instead of minutes. Fewer 9 PM pantry raids without white-knuckle willpower.
Blood sugar control: Soluble fiber blunts the glucose spike from a meal, which means steadier energy and fewer crash-driven cravings.
Calorie discount: High-fiber foods are bulky and chewy — you naturally eat fewer calories without counting anything.
Heart and gut health: Soluble fiber helps lower LDL cholesterol, and fiber feeds the gut bacteria linked to better metabolic health.
How to hit 30+ grams without thinking hard:
Breakfast: half a cup of oats (4g) with a handful of berries (4g)
Lunch: add a cup of lentils or black beans to anything (12–15g)
Snack: an apple or pear, skin on (4–5g)
Dinner: two fists of vegetables (5–8g)
One warning: ramp up gradually — add 5 grams or so per week and drink more water as you go. Jumping from 15 to 35 grams overnight will make your gut file a formal complaint.
Protein builds the muscle. Fiber quietly manages the appetite that determines whether the fat comes off. Track it for one week — the number will probably surprise you.

FROM RYAN’S DESK
The expectations of others don't determine your potential. The standards you hold yourself to do. Raise your expectations, keep your promises, and refuse to settle for less than your best. Your standards become your lifestyle. Be the guy who sets the bar higher every day. That's where excellence begins.

Quick Tip: Elevated Planks for Rock-Solid Core Stability
Elevated planks are a great way to strengthen your core while reducing the stress that a traditional floor plank can place on your shoulders, wrists, and lower back. By placing your hands on a bench or sturdy surface, you can focus on maintaining proper form and building endurance without sacrificing technique.
Keep your body in a straight line from your shoulders to your heels, brace your abs, and avoid letting your hips sag. Think about pulling your belly button toward your spine while breathing normally throughout the hold.
Aim for 2–3 sets of 20–45 seconds with perfect form. A stronger core improves posture, supports your lower back, and creates a solid foundation for everything from lifting weights to everyday activities.

Myth or Real: "Muscle turns to fat when you stop training."
Myth. Muscle and fat are completely different tissues — one cannot become the other, any more than a brick can turn into wood. What actually happens when you stop training: muscle slowly shrinks from disuse, your calorie burn drops, and if eating habits stay the same, fat gradually accumulates. Same silhouette change, totally different mechanism. The good news is the flip side: muscle memory is real. Muscle cells keep extra nuclei gained from past training for years, so rebuilding lost muscle is much faster than building it the first time. A layoff is a pause, not a reset to zero.
Fit Trivia: Which NFL legend shocked the world by retiring at age 30, walking away one season shy of breaking the all-time rushing record?

Answer: Barry Sanders! The Detroit Lions great retired in 1999 just 1,457 yards short of Walter Payton's record — and famously announced it by fax while boarding a flight to London. He never played another down.
