Why “Eating Healthy” May Seem Like a War

Eating healthy can often feel like a battle. Despite knowing the benefits of a wholesome diet, many of us struggle to make healthy choices. Why is this? Do we all lack discipline? Simply put, we do not. Our environment is not built to support nutritious eating habits.

When you step outside, whether it's a quick lunch during a busy workday or grocery shopping for the week, the battlefield unfolds. Fast food joints and processed snacks are not only more accessible but often cheaper than their healthy counterparts. These options are designed to be tempting, playing on our innate desires for instant gratification, often enhanced with sugars, fats, and artificial flavors.

Inside the supermarket, the challenge continues. The majority of shelf space is occupied by processed foods that are convenient and designed for a long shelf life, not for health. These items often contain preservatives, high levels of sodium, and other additives that can undermine our health goals.

It is not surprising that so many of us struggle. But we can’t change the world, and the question is whether we let it win us or be a warrior instead. Here are a few simple things you can do to approach the convenient fast-food world as a warrior:

  • Grocery Stores: Focus on shopping around the perimeter of the grocery store, where fresh produce, dairy, and meats are typically located. Avoid the central aisles where processed foods dominate. Do not go to the store hungry.

  • Eating Out: When eating out, order smartly and do not shy away from giving precise directions. We have written quick directions on how to order your meals HERE.

  • Healthy Home: Make it a rule only to bring healthy foods to your home. This will give you a temptation-free home.

Have any regrets?

“If I did something at the time, that’s what I thought was right — so I have no regrets.”

I heard someone say that once and loved it.

All the time behind us is done and over. We shouldn’t ignore it because that’s throwing away your life lessons — and the tuition isn’t cheap.

Our outlook, though, should be future-focused. You should never want to turn back time because your life is lived in the future, never the past. #ModernFitness

Do Microwaves Zap Nutrition?

The main factors that affect nutrient loss during cooking are temperature, cooking time, and the amount of liquid used. Since microwave cooking often uses less heat and shorter cooking times than other methods like boiling or baking, it tends to preserve more vitamins and minerals. For example, microwave cooking can better retain vitamin C and B vitamins that are sensitive to heat and water.

Microwave cooking is not only convenient but can also be a nutritionally advantageous option. It does not significantly zap nutrients from food; rather, it can preserve them better than some traditional cooking methods.
