Alcohol After 40: What That Nightly Drink Is Really Costing You

Nobody wants to hear it, but alcohol is often the invisible anchor on an otherwise solid fitness plan. You don't have to quit to benefit — but you should know exactly what each drink is doing so you can decide what it's worth.

Four ways alcohol works against a man over 40:

  • It flattens your sleep: A couple of drinks might help you fall asleep, but they suppress deep and REM sleep — the exact stages where recovery and testosterone production happen. You wake up less recovered even after eight hours.

  • It stalls muscle repair: Alcohol blunts the muscle-building response to training for up to a day, so that hard workout gets a smaller payoff.

  • It's a testosterone tax: Heavy or frequent drinking lowers testosterone and raises cortisol — the wrong direction on both.

  • It's empty calories that lower your guard: Seven calories per gram, no nutrition, and it reliably makes the late-night pizza sound like a great idea.

The practical playbook (no lecture, just leverage):

  • Cap it at 1–2 drinks, and never right before bed — give your body 3+ hours to clear it before sleep.

  • Alternate every drink with a full glass of water.

  • Keep two or three completely alcohol-free nights a week — this is where most of the benefit lives.

  • Notice the recovery difference the morning after a dry night. That feedback is more convincing than any article.

The honest bottom line: an occasional beer or glass of wine with people you enjoy is part of a good life, and it won't derail you. The problem is the automatic nightly drink that quietly caps your sleep, recovery, and progress. Make it a choice, not a habit, and you keep the pleasure while cutting most of the cost.

FROM RYAN’S DESK

Your future isn’t determined by your intentions. It’s shaped by your decisions. Every meal, every workout, every choice adds another brick to the life you’re building. Don’t underestimate the small things—they become the big things over time. Be the guy who chooses with purpose. That’s where your future is created.

Quick Tip: "Calf Raises" for resilient ankles and better circulation

Your calves are the pump that pushes blood back up from your feet — and they weaken with age and desk time, which shows up as stiff ankles and poor circulation. Calf raises fix both. Stand tall, feet hip-width, and rise onto the balls of your feet as high as you can. Pause and squeeze at the top for a second, then lower slowly over 3 seconds — that slow drop is where the work happens.

Do 2–3 sets of 15–20, a few times a week. For more challenge, do them one leg at a time or off the edge of a step for a bigger stretch.

Myth or Real: "Eating carbs after 6 PM makes you gain fat."

Myth. Your body doesn't start a special fat-storage shift when the clock hits 6 PM. Fat gain comes from eating more total calories than you burn over days and weeks — not from the timing of any one meal. A bowl of rice at 8 PM is metabolized the same as one at noon. In fact, for many men, having some carbs at dinner improves sleep and helps an evening workout recover better. What actually drives this myth is behavior: late-night eating tends to be mindless snacking on chips and sweets in front of a screen, piled on top of a full day's calories. Fix the mindless part, and the clock doesn't matter.

Our Picks: Supps We Actually Use

Some of our coach’s favorite supplements:

Add this to your water in the morning or in your post-workout shake. Creatine is one of the few supplements that has a mountain of data proving its benefits. Don’t miss out on it!

A great way to hit your protein goals. Don’t rely on a protein powder alone, but add it as a post-workout shake or midday shake to increase your protein intake and hit your protein goals. Remember, high protein equals higher muscle and higher satiety.

Replenishes essential electrolytes. Use this if you sweat a lot, do intermittent fasting, or go on long-distance walks, hikes, or runs.

Fit Trivia: Which basketball legend — a six-time NBA champion — teamed up with Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes to beat a team of aliens in 1996's Space Jam?

Answer: Michael Jordan! He filmed it during his brief retirement from basketball, reportedly training on a custom court built next to the set so he wouldn't lose a step before his return to the Chicago Bulls.
