Why You’re Probably Underestimating Your Recovery Needs

Most guys over 40 are wired to grind—more sets, more workouts, more effort.

But if you’re feeling:

  • Run-down

  • Less motivated

  • Weaker than usual

…it might not be a lack of discipline.

It might be a lack of recovery.

Recovery is where growth happens. When you skip it, you stall progress—even while working hard.

Here’s what proper recovery looks like:

  • 7+ hours of sleep

  • At least one true rest day per week

  • Deloads every 6–8 weeks

  • Enough protein to support repair

You’re not lazy for taking a break. You’re smart enough to train for the long game.

FROM RYAN’S DESK

Comfort kills progress. Growth lives in discomfort—early mornings, heavy reps, clean meals. Stop seeking easy. Chase what challenges you. Be the man who embraces the hard path. That’s where strength is forged.

Momentum Kickstart:

What You Don’t Do Matters As Much As What You Do

Avoid:

  • Overtraining

  • Undereating

  • Skipping sleep

  • Ignoring stress

Your best progress might come from subtracting, not adding.

Question from Our Readers:

“Should I take a deload week if I feel tired but not sore?”

– Ben, 51, from Tampa

Yes—and good on you for asking.

Soreness isn’t the only sign of fatigue.

If your:

  • Strength is dipping

  • Motivation is down

  • Sleep is off

  • Joints feel creaky

…it’s time to reduce volume/intensity for a few days. That’s a deload.

You’ll come back stronger.

Fit Trivia: Which 90s action movie featured a hero doing slow pushups while being interrogated—proving recovery doesn’t always mean rest?

Answer: Lethal Weapon 3 (1992)! Mel Gibson’s character, Riggs, casually drops to the floor and cranks out pushups while being grilled in a police precinct—reminding all of us that some recovery just looks different when you're a total savage.
