Why You Don’t Need More Exercises—You Need More Effort

Scrolling through social media can make you feel like your workout needs to look like Cirque du Soleil to be effective.

Reality check:

You need effort, not entertainment.

Here’s what actually works:

  • Repeat core lifts weekly (presses, rows, squats, hinges)

  • Push close to failure with good form

  • Track progress and aim to beat your last session

You’ll build more muscle doing 4 great sets of dumbbell presses than bouncing between 9 random exercises with bands, balls, and burpees.

FROM RYAN’S DESK

Life won't hand you the perfect moment. You're not always going to be rested, fired up, or ready. But none of that matters. The man who wins is the one who shows up anyway. Put in the reps. Stack the wins. Earn your results.

Pro Tip:

Master the Basics Before You Chase Variety

Chasing the next cool move might feel fun, but…

True strength is built through repetition and refinement.

Do it until you’re not just doing the movement—you’re owning it.

Question from Our Readers:

“Can I build muscle with just a few exercises?”

– James, 53, from Atlanta

Absolutely. In fact, you’ll probably build more muscle that way.

A minimalist approach like:

  • Dumbbell press

  • Goblet squat

  • Row variation

  • RDL or hip hinge

  • Loaded carries

…done with intention, intensity, and consistency will outperform any complicated program. Fewer moves, more focus.

Fit Trivia: Which 90s martial arts film featured a training montage with tree-trunk kicks, blindfolded sparring, and a coconut drop challenge?

Answer: Kickboxer (1989—but iconic into the early 90s)! Jean-Claude Van Damme trained to fight Tong Po by kicking palm trees until they splintered, dodging attacks blindfolded, and bracing under coconut drops. Brutal, low-tech, and unforgettable—this was old-school conditioning at its wildest.
