Breakouts and acne flare-ups when working out are common, and I'm no stranger to this phenomenon. To this day, I carry the scars of back breakouts from my early days of working out.

It's a frustrating side effect of pushing your limits physically, but have you ever wondered exactly what triggers these unwanted guests?

Here's a quick breakdown:

Why It Happens:

  • Sweat and Oil Mix: Exercise increases sweat, which mixes with skin oils and dead cells, clogging pores.

  • Friction from Equipment and Clothing: Constant rubbing against gym gear or tight clothing (acne mechanica) irritates the skin.

  • Increased Dairy Intake: Some men experience breakouts from whey protein, which may stimulate acne-promoting hormones.

  • Bacteria Transfer: Touching your face during workouts transfers bacteria from equipment to your skin.

What You Can Do:

  1. Pre-Workout Cleanse: Always start with a clean face; use gentle, skin-friendly products.

  2. Wear the Right Gear: Choose loose, breathable fabrics to minimize sweat and bacteria traps.

  3. Shower Immediately: Wash off sweat and bacteria right after your workout. If you can't shower, use facial wipes on acne-prone areas.

  4. Hands Off: Keep your hands away from your face to reduce bacteria transfer.

  5. Consider Alternatives to Whey: If whey protein triggers breakouts, explore other protein sources, such as pea or hemp protein.

  6. Disinfect Equipment: Before using gym equipment, use antibacterial wipes to lower bacteria exposure, especially if you work out in a busy gym.

Daily Fiber Needs for Men

Fiber, found in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes, is essential for digestive health. It helps prevent constipation, lower cholesterol levels, and manage blood sugar. But its benefits extend beyond keeping things moving smoothly; it can also aid in fat loss and reduce the risk of heart disease.

For men, the recommended daily intake of fiber is:

  • Ages 19-50: 38 grams per day

  • Ages 51 and older: 30 grams per day

These recommendations come from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Hitting your daily fiber is quite achievable. Incorporating a variety of fiber-rich foods into your diet is key. Think whole fruits instead of juices, swap out white bread for whole grain and opt for brown rice over white. Legumes like beans and lentils are fiber powerhouses and can be easily added to soups, salads, or as side dishes.

If your current intake is low, increase it gradually to prevent digestive discomfort.

Spotting the Signs: The 6 Most Common Nutritional Deficiencies and Their Symptoms

  1. Vitamin D Deficiency: Fatigue, bone pain, muscle weakness, mood changes like depression.

  2. Iron Deficiency: Extreme fatigue, weakness, pale skin, anemia, chest pain, and shortness of breath.

  3. Vitamin B12 Deficiency: Numbness or tingling in the hands and feet, difficulties with balance, anemia, fatigue, weakness, and memory loss.

  4. Calcium Deficiency: Muscle cramps, dry skin, brittle nails, tooth decay, and, in severe cases, confusion or memory loss.

  5. Vitamin A Deficiency: Night blindness, dry eyes, severe dry skin, and increased susceptibility to infections.
