The Truth About Fat-Burning Workouts

There’s no single “fat-burning” workout.

Fat loss is a full-system game.

Here’s what matters:

  • You’re training with enough intensity to build/maintain muscle

  • You’re eating in a calorie deficit with adequate protein

  • You’re recovering well enough to do it all again tomorrow

So instead of asking “Is this workout burning fat?”

Ask:

Does this workout help me build or maintain muscle while in a calorie deficit?

If yes, keep going. You’re winning.

FROM RYAN’S DESK

Comfort zones are cages. Growth lives in the grind—the early mornings, the extra reps, the tough conversations with yourself. Don’t seek shortcuts. Own the struggle, because that’s the only path to strength. Real men lean into discomfort and come out stronger every time.

Pro Tip:

The Best Workout Is the One You Can Recover From

You don’t get results from crushing yourself—you get results from recovering well enough to show up consistently.

  • If you’re always sore, tired, or dragging, dial it back

  • Leave 1–2 reps in the tank

  • Sleep and eat to recover

This is a marathon, not a meltdown.

Question from Our Readers:

“Should I train fasted in the morning for better fat loss?”

– Dwayne, 48, from Richmond

Short answer: If you feel good fasted, go for it—but it’s not magic.

Fasted training may help you feel lighter and more focused, but it doesn't automatically burn more fat unless your overall nutrition is dialed in.

If you’re lifting heavy, consider a small protein snack or shake beforehand for better performance.

Listen to your body. Choose what helps you train your best.

Fit Trivia: Which 80s animated character had a signature move that included deadlifting boulders and flexing before every battle?

Answer: He-Man from Masters of the Universe! Armed with a magical sword, absurdly broad shoulders, and a workout routine that involved lifting planets, He-Man was the original cartoon gym bro. Before you had a gym membership, he had the power.
