Could Skipping Workouts Boost Your Weight Loss?

Hey there! I wanted to share an interesting experience I had with one of my clients a couple of weeks ago. This client focused on weight loss, had an extremely busy week at work, and skipped an entire training week. The result? He lost even more weight that week! This might seem surprising, but there are some good reasons why this happened.

Let's dive into why taking breaks from workouts can sometimes lead to unexpected benefits, especially regarding weight loss.

Reduced Stress Levels: Exercise is a physical stressor on the body. While it's usually a good kind of stress that promotes growth and health, constant training without adequate rest can increase stress levels. My client’s busy week at work may have forced him to rest more, which could have reduced his overall stress levels. Lower stress levels can reduce the production of cortisol, a hormone that promotes fat storage, especially around the abdomen.

Improved Sleep Quality: When we constantly train, our bodies need more rest to recover. By skipping workouts, my client might have had an easier time letting his body recover in shorter hours of sleep.

Reduced Inflammation: Intense and frequent exercise can sometimes lead to increased inflammation in the body. Taking a break allows the body to reduce inflammation and recover more effectively. Lower inflammation levels can enhance metabolic processes and improve overall weight loss efforts.

Psychological Reset: A week off from training can also provide a mental break. This psychological rest can reduce feelings of burnout and increase motivation when returning to workouts. A renewed mindset can lead to more effective and enjoyable exercise sessions.

So, do not get discouraged if you have to skip a few days or even a week! Keep up the good nutrition and pick up the training when you can. Remember, this is a lifestyle, and life happens!

Can You Test Your Testosterone from Home?

There are several home testosterone test kits available on the market. Unfortunately, you will need to send back the sample to get the test results.

These kits typically involve a simple process:

  1. Order a Test Kit: You can purchase a testosterone test kit online or at some pharmacies. Popular brands include Everlywell, LetsGetChecked, and myLAB Box.

  2. Sample Collection: The test usually requires a small sample of your saliva, blood, or urine. You might need to prick your finger to collect a blood sample or spit into a tube for saliva and blood tests.

  3. Send the Sample: After collecting the sample, you send it back to the lab using the prepaid shipping provided in the kit.

  4. Receive Your Results: Once the lab processes your sample, you'll receive your results via email or through a secure online portal, usually within a few days.

When you receive your results, you’ll see your testosterone levels compared to the normal range for your age and sex. If your levels are outside the normal range, it’s a good idea to consult a healthcare provider to discuss the findings and determine the best course of action. It is also advised to compare the number to your previous results and understand whether the level is dropping or increasing.

However, there are limitations to the home testing kits:

  • Accuracy: While home tests are generally reliable, they may not be as accurate as tests conducted in a medical setting.

  • Follow-Up: If your results are abnormal, you’ll need to follow up with a healthcare provider for further testing and advice.
