Don’t Chase Soreness—Chase Progress

You don’t need to feel wrecked to make progress.

Soreness is a signal, not a scoreboard.

In fact, constantly chasing soreness can backfire:

  • It can delay recovery, making it harder to train consistently

  • It may indicate poor programming, like too much volume or unnecessary novelty

  • It’s not a reliable marker of effective training; progressive overload is

What should you chase instead?

  • Heavier weights lifted

  • Better form under load

  • More reps with the same weight

  • Shorter rest while maintaining output

Progress > pain. Always.

FROM RYAN’S DESK

Blame weakens you. Ownership strengthens you. When you take responsibility, you take control. Circumstances don’t decide your future, your choices do. Be the guy who owns every result. That’s where real power begins.

Resource Highlight: Randal’s Story — From Stuck to Shredded

Before 3M Coaching, Rand felt like his best years were behind him. A retired military man, he had the discipline, but no roadmap. Workouts were sporadic, meals lacked structure, and he’d started avoiding the mirror altogether.

Then everything changed.

In just 90 days, Rand turned everything around. Here’s how:

  • Scheduled workouts and made them non-negotiable, even saying no to social outings to stay on track

  • Dialed in his meal prep with creative, flavorful options that kept him consistent

  • Learned portion control and flexible eating; no more “all or nothing” mentality

  • Found a sustainable balance between discipline and enjoying life

He sums it up perfectly:

“In the beginning, I was embarrassed to even look in the mirror. Now I’m stronger, leaner, and in control. It’s not about being perfect, it’s about having a plan and sticking to it.”

Question from Our Readers:

“Should I train abs every day to get a six-pack?”

— Ben, 44, from San Diego

Nope.

Abs are muscles like any other; they need recovery, too.

What actually reveals your six-pack:

  • Consistent fat loss through smart nutrition

  • Training your abs 2–3x/week with proper resistance

  • Compound movements that engage the core (like overhead presses, planks, and rows)

If your diet’s not dialed in, no amount of crunches will matter.

Fit Trivia: Which 80s action hero was also a professional bodybuilder before becoming a Hollywood star?

Answer: Arnold Schwarzenegger. Before The Terminator, Arnold was a seven-time Mr. Olympia and helped bring bodybuilding into the mainstream. He didn’t just play the action hero—he was one.
