4 Hidden Downsides of Bodybuilding: What You Need to Know

Bodybuilding isn't all about gains and glory; there are a few hitches along the way that don't always make it to the highlight reel.

Make sure you consider these downsides when trying to get big:

1. Hard on the Joints: Pushing your limits with heavy weights can be hard on your joints. The repetitive stress of lifting can lead to discomfort and, over time, more serious joint issues.

2. Lowers Flexibility: Focusing solely on muscle growth can decrease your flexibility. Without incorporating stretching into your routine, those muscles can tighten up and reduce your range of motion.

3. Social and Lifestyle Sacrifices: The strict diet and workout regimen of bodybuilding can clash with social outings and relaxation. In comparison with more lifestyle-friendly protocols, Bodybuilding does not leave a lot of room for cheat meals or an out with friends during the cutting phases.

4. Aesthetics – For Funzies: While bodybuilders might aim for peak muscularity, it's interesting to note that not everyone’s idea of attractiveness aligns with the bodybuilder's physique. Surprisingly, studies suggest many prefer a more muscular yet lean look over extreme bulk.

Our Advice? Focus on the lean, muscular look and your health. This will be easier on your body and allow for more flexibility with your schedule and life.

Is Protein Powder Necessary for Success?

A question we often hear is, "Do I have to have protein powder to be successful?" It's understandable; protein powders are popular and seem almost synonymous with fitness progress. But let's clarify: while protein is crucial for muscle repair, growth, and overall health, protein shakes aren't mandatory.

Protein powders are indeed a convenient way to meet your daily protein needs, especially if you're always on the go or struggle to consume enough protein through your diet. However, they're just one source of protein. Any high-quality protein source will support your fitness goals, and depending on your choice of protein powder, some alternatives might even offer better nutritional value.

Consider integrating whole food sources of protein into your diet, such as:

  • Lean meats: Chicken, turkey, and lean cuts of beef.

  • Fish: Salmon, tuna, and trout, which are also rich in omega-3 fatty acids.

  • Dairy: Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, and milk.

  • Plant-based options: Legumes, beans, lentils, tofu, and quinoa for those following a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle.

The Easy Hack to Staying Healthy in a Sedentary Job

We know many of you spend hours in front of a computer daily, as do most of us at RE Fitness.

In search of inspiration for a productive routine that also incorporated physical activity, we discovered Dan Brown's unique approach. Dan Brown, renowned for his bestselling novels, has a structured daily routine that balances work and wellness.

To combat the sedentary nature of his work, Brown sets an hourly timer to remind himself to get up, stretch, and do push-ups or sit-ups for 60 seconds.

This not only keeps him active but also helps maintain his focus and creativity throughout his long writing sessions. By integrating regular breaks for movement, Brown ensures that his physically inactive profession doesn't take a toll on his health.

This approach sounds super easy and fast to implement. Unless you work in an environment where exercising is not possible, there is no excuse not to give it a shot! Let me know if you like it.
